Rapid development and widespread of information and communication technologies had and still has great impact on distance learning. Learning material can be delivered to student on many ways, while quality and efficiency of distance learning was brought to a higher level. Besides media and variety of options for transmission learning materials also greatly developed approach to distance learning student as well as process of distance learning which is becoming more interactive and closer to the traditional face to face learning.
Progress of information and communication technology also resulted development several types and forms of distance learning:
- correspondence which delivers learning material to student via regular mail; however, correspondence via regular mail is rapidly declining, while regular mail is being widely replaced by e-mail and fax
- broadcasting which transmits learning material via radio or television but this type of distance learning is also declining because it does not provide sufficient two-way communication between teacher and student
- computer based learning in which student interacts with computer contend stored on a CD-ROM or published on Internet website
- Internet based learning conducting distance learning via synchronous and/or asynchronous technologies
- M-learning or distance learning via mobile phone
- hybrid or blended distance learning which acquires occasional physical on-site presence and on-site taking examinations
There are many possibilities and different types and systems of distance learning which provide highly qualitative and interactive learning, and enabling student to further his/hers formal education in any science field or to get specialized training and knowledge.
